Speaker: Dr. Paul Rosen

” Is  Periodontics a Dying Specialty?”

OAP 2015  Annual session will be held on October 24, 2015 at the Renaissance Hotel Downtown Columbus.  This year’s speaker will be  Dr Paul Rosen and his topic will be ” Is  Periodontics a Dying Specialty?”

There is a concern that despite the recent evidence indicating that greater than 50 percent of the population has periodontal disease, the number of patients being seen in periodontal practices is diminishing. Moreover, everyone in dentistry is getting into the placement of dental implants. It is no wonder that periodontists question if there is a future to the specialty. What is one to do? There are certain aspects to patient care that both periodontal residency training and continuing education provide that set periodontists apart. Emerging technologies are making the treatment of moderate-severe periodontitis more predictable today and better accepted by our patients. Advances made in growth factors, barrier membranes and cellular graft materials/scaffolds are rewriting all the rules to regeneration. Opportunities exist if you are willing to embrace them. Knowing how to apply the cutting edge technologies while keeping our therapy grounded in sound biologic principles will continue to set periodontists apart and maintain the need for the specialty. This lecture will explore algorithms to care that have and continue to provide predictable results for practitioners willing to embrace ever changing therapy.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the circumstances where growth factors may enhance success
  • Identify where a cell-based graft material may push the envelope for treating difficult lesions that have been thought to be hopeless
  • List the steps involved with treating peri-implant diseases
  • Discuss the role of the lasers in periodontal care
